Where to Find Common Plumbing Leaks in Your Home

Are you excited for spring?  As you begin to start all of your spring cleaning projects, we remind homeowners to also look for plumbing leaks.  Celebrate #FixALeakWeek and the first day of spring this weekend by addressing these common home plumbing leaks.

Common Plumbing Leaks:

  • Washing Machine - Washing machines use a lot of water when in use.  If you notice a plumbing leak, you may need to replace the rubber or plastic hose with a stronger, steel braided hose.  You should replace these hoses every 5 years to make sure that the system is in good shape.
  • Toilets - There is nothing worse than finding that your toilet is clogged.  If you do have a toilet clog, remove the lid off of the reservoir and pull of the float or close the flapper.  This will kep water from flowing into the bowl and causing it to overflow.
  • Water Heaters - Hot water is essential for comfortable showers and cooking.  Water heaters generally have a lifespan of ten years.  Old water heaters can rust, corrode, and leak.  Have your water heater inspected every year to make sure that it is still in good condition.  This will help prevent leaks!
  • Dishwashers - Keep water off of your kitchen floor by checking under your sink for leaks.  Look around the base of the dishwasher, too.  If you notice discolored floors, warping tiles or water spots, you may have a leak.
  • Faucets - Of course, the most common plumbing leak is a faucet drip.  Since faucets experience heavy wear and tear over time, the seals can become damaged and change the pressure of the faucet.  Pay attention to any leaks and look for discoloration in your sink.

Check out this article for more tips on how to find plumbing leaks at home.  You can also contact the plumbing technicians at bluefrog Plumbing + Drain of Dallas/Fort Worth with any questions you have about your home plumbing system. Call 214-736-1881 to contact our professional plumbing technicians - we are available 24/7 with no overtime fees!

Are you due for a new water heater?  Now is the best time to contact bluefrog Plumbing + Drain for an upgrade!  New energy-efficiency standards will be required of all residential water heaters sold after April 16, 2015.  Here are a few things to keep in mind as you get ready for the new standards.

How will the new standards effect your new water heater installation?

  • New Capacity Considerations - Changes in the new water heater unit sizes may require some homeowners to down-size the gallon capacity of their water heaters, install multiple units, or make other modifications.
  • Increased Initial Investment - While the new water heaters will save you money in the long-term by making your home more energy efficient, there will be a larger upfront cost.
  • Potential Relocation - Since the unit sizes will differ, your water heater may need to be relocated.  Our professional technicians can help you determine the best option for your home based on applicable space and the amount of hot water you need supplied.

Can You Identify These Home Plumbing Myths?

How much do you know about the plumbing system in your home?  Here are a few of the most common home plumbing myths.

Common Plumbing Myths:
  • Banging Noises Mean Your Water Heater Will Explore - The reasoning behind why your water heating is making a lot of noise is that sediment has collected within the heating tank.  This sediment is made of minerals from the hard water.  When it sinks to the bottom of the tank and heats up, you'll hear a popping sound.  However, if the water in your tank is boiling, then this is a sign that your water heater is put at a temperature that is too high.
  • Leaky Faucets Aren't a Big Deal - It's important to fix any faucet leak, no matter how big or small.  Even a slight kitchen faucet leak can waste more than one trillion gallons of water annually nationwide.  It also puts extra wear and tear on your plumbing system.
  • Putting a Brick in Your Tank will Save Water - Bricks deteriorate over time and can cause your toilet flapper to break.  An alternative, is that you might displace too much water by placing a brick in the tank.  This means that you will have to flush twice.
Check out this article from Angies List for more tips to help you identify common plumbing myths.  You can also contact bluefrog Plumbing + Drain with any questions you have about your home plumbing.  Our experienced technicians can help you with all of your repair and installation needs.  Call 214-736-1881 to contact our professional plumbing technicians - we are available 24/7 with no overtime fees!

How to Prevent Sink Staining

There is nothing more frustrating than finding that your kitchen sink is stained from coffee, tea and food.  Stains can make even a new sink look old and outdated.  Fortunately, there are a few ways to prevent stains and keep your kitchen sink bright and white.

How to Prevent Stains:
  • Keep the Sink Dry - Keep your sink dry in between uses.  Turn off the faucet and repair any leaks (even small ones) to keep liquids from sitting in the sink and staining the basin.
  • Clean After Use - Be sure to rinse your sink thoroughly after pouring acidic foods, such as tomato juice, coffee or tea into the sink.  You should also use a cleaner and sponge to remove any grime from the sink once a day.
  • Use Bleach - If you do notice some staining beginning to appear in your porcelain sink, line the sink with a double layer of paper towels.  Then sprinkle enough bleach on the towels to dampen them.  Leave them in place overnight and wipe them done in the morning.
For more tips on how to keep your kitchen sink bright and white, check out this article from SFGate.  You can also contact bluefrog Plumbing + Drain with any questions you have about your home plumbing.  Our experienced technicians can help you with all of your repair and installation needs.  Call 214-736-1881 to contact our professional plumbing technicians - we are available 24/7 with no overtime fees!

How to Get Jewelry Out of Your Drain

Dropping a beloved piece of a jewelry down the sink can be heartbreaking.  Fortunately, in many cases you are able to retrieve your jewelry.  Here are a  few steps you can take to help retrieve lost items from down your drain.

How to Retrieve Jewelry:

  • Turn off the Water Supply - Before you touch your plumbing system, you'll want to turn the water off.  Turn off your water supply by turning the valve clockwise.
  • Locate the P-Trap - This is the u-shaped part of your plumbing depicted in the image to the right.
  • Clear the Surrounding Area - Place a small bucket underneath the p-track before loosening the area.  There will be a lot of gunk, grim and water coming out of the pipe when you loosen it.
  • Loosen the P-Trap - Use adjustable pliers or a wrench to loosen the slip nuts on either end of the p-trap.  Use counterclockwise movement to accomplish this.  Your jewelry should fall out into your bucket!

Check out this article from Good Housekeeping for more tips on how to get your jewelry out of your drain.  If you are still having trouble, give us a call!  Our plumbers can help you retrieve your jewelry.  Call 214-736-1881 to contact our professional plumbing technicians - we are available 24/7 with no overtime fees!

Bathroom Design and Organizational Ideas

Keeping your bathroom organized isn't an easy task - especially in a busy household.  Fortunately, there are a few design options that will help keep your bathroom clear of clutter.  Here are a few tips to help you design a bathroom that is both beautiful and functional.

Organization and Design Tips:

  • Add Bright Lighting - Chances are your bathroom doesn't have large, bright windows to let in light.  These rooms can look pretty dark, even in the middle of the day.  Built-in cabinet lighting or vanity lighting will help improve your bathroom's functionality.  The lights can also function as a nightlight!
  • Create a Cubby - Keep your health and beauty products out of sight and off of the counter by putting them in a cubby.  They'll still be easily accessible, but also in a place where they won't get in your way.
  • Use Drawer Organizers - Bathroom drawers can get messy.  Use drawer inserts to better manage your clutter.
  • Add Mirrors - Mirrors can add design and function to your bathroom.  They can make a small room look bigger and brighter.
For more bathroom organization and design ideas, check out this ideabook on Houzz.  If you are planning a remodel, contact bluefrog Plumbing + Drain for all of your bathroom plumbing installation needs.  Call 214-736-1881 to contact our professional plumbing technicians - we are available 24/7 with no overtime fees!

Plumbing problems can be frustrating.  Fortunately, by taking a few preventative measures, you can help keep your plumbing in good shape and prevent problems before they occur.  Here are a few home plumbing maintenance tips!

Maintenance Tips:

  • Look for Leaks - Keep an eye out for plumbing problems in your home.  Little problems, like a leaky faucet, can be easier to fix when you catch them early on.
  • Don't Delay Repairs - Once you find a plumbing problem, it's important that you address it right away.  Plumbing problems can put extra wear and tear on your sink fixtures and encourage the growth of mold and mildew.

Cosmetics to Keep Out of the Drains:

  • Coconut Oil
  • Lotions
  • Moisturizer
  • Hair Gel
  • Shaving Cream
  • Cream Foundations

How to Prevent a Clogged Toilet

Clogged toilets are understandably frustrating for homeowners.  They can be messy and leave you with damaged floors and plumbing pipes.  Knowing what to flush and how to keep unwanted objects out of your toilet can help prevent clogs.  Here are a few prevention tips that will help keep your bathroom fully functional.

Prevention Tips:

  • Know What You Can Flush - Many homeowners flush things that they shouldn't.  Facial tissues, wipes, napkins, paper towels, floss, hair and many other items can clog your drain!
  • Be Sure to Flush Properly - Sometimes clogs can occur when you're just flushing toilet paper.  When toilet paper balls up, only the outer portion dissolves.  Only use as much toilet paper as is necessary.
  • Don't Place Items on Toilet Tank - The toilet tank shouldn't be used as extra counter space.  While it might seem like a great place to store extra toilet paper, soap, or brushes, these items can be accidentally knocked into the toilet bowl.  Keeping this area clear can help prevent a clogged drain.
  • Address Problems Early On - If you notice that your toilet is draining slowly, this is most likely a sign that a clog is forming in your drain.  Instead of waiting for the clog to develop further, use a plunger to clear the drain.

Read this article from SF Gate for more tips on how you can prevent a clogged toilet!

  • Upgrade to Energy Star Appliances - Energy star rated dishwashers and washing machines are an efficient way to reduce water consumption, including your home's hot water.

Benefits of Using a Water Softening and Filtration System

Do you live off of bottled water and purification pitchers?  It might be time to have a water softening and filtration system installed directly into your home!  In addition to saving money, here are a few of the ways this system can benefit your home.

Water Softening and Filtration Benefits:

  • Simplify Cleaning - Hard water can leave white spots or streaks on your clothes and dishes.  By using a water softener, you can help reduce the amount of soap and detergent you need to use!
  • Extend Your Appliance Life - Hard water is full of minerals that can build up inside of your appliances.  Water softening systems can help extend the life of your appliances and help you save money.
  • Heat Water Faster - Hot water heaters benefit from water softeners too.  Soft water can be heated more quickly than hard water.  This helps improve the efficiency of your system and reduces your energy use.
  • Keep Your Plumbing Clean - Hard water leaves behind mineral deposits in your plumbing fixtures and pipes.  These deposits can build over time and cause clogs.  By using a water softening system, you can extend the life of your plumbing system.

Read more about how a water softening and filtration system can benefit your home here or visit our website to learn more about our services.

Our professional plumbing technicians can help you determine whether or not a water softening and filtration system would be the right choice for your home.  Call 214-736-1881 to reach our plumbing technicians.  We are available 24/7 with no overtime fees!
