  • Let the hot water run after you put anything down your kitchen sink.
  • Avoid putting grease or oil down your drain.  Wipe down any pots and pans and save oil in an old coffee can to dispose of it properly.
  • Use a drain screen in your sinks and bathtub to keep hair, soap, and food particles from getting stuck in your pipes.

How To Prevent Frozen Plumbing Pipes

Temperatures tend to drop overnight.  During the winter months, this can sometimes mean freezing temperatures.  Here are a few tips to prevent plumbing problems during cold spells.

Prevention Tips:

  • Remove Outdoor Hoses - If you suspect that the temperature will drop below freezing, remove and drain all of your outdoor hoses.  Frozen water can expand and cause your pipes to break!
  • Set Your Thermostat - If you know the weather is going to drop below freezing over night, keep your thermostat temperature a little bit higher.  Low nighttime temperatures might leave you with a higher heating bill, but the extra heat will help you prevent more serious plumbing problems.
  • Let Air Circulate - Are certain rooms in your home colder than others?  Keep doors open to allow warmer air to circulate around any exposed plumbing pipes.

How to Prevent Mineral Buildup

Do you notice hard water spots on your faucets and showerheads?  Here are a few ways to help keep your plumbing system clean and operating smoothly!

Hard Water Tips:

  • Test Your Water Supply - Test your home water to see if your tap water is hard.  The presence of minerals like calcium and magnesium can combine to create lime scale deposits inside your plumbing system and appliances.
  • Clean Your Faucets - Use white vinegar, lemon juice or liquid cleaner to keep your faucets free of mineral buildup.  You can clean your faucets by placing the liquids on a toothbrush or filling a plastic bag with white vinegar and leaving it over night.
  • Clean Showerheads - The best way to clean your showerhead is by removing it and placing it in a plastic bag filled with white vinegar or a solution of ammonia and water.
  • Install a Water-Softener - If the water coming out of your tap is hard water, consider installing a water-softener.  This will help prevent mineral deposits!

Understanding Common Tankless Water Heater Myths

Tankless water heaters a great choice for your home.  They are comfortable, convenient and take up less space than conventional water heaters!  Are you thinking of making the switch?  Here are a few things every homeowners should know.

Tankless Water Heater Myths:
  • Installation - Many people assume that tankless water heaters only need to be plugged in.  However, many homes were not created with tankless retrofit in mind.  We need to make sure that your gas meter and gas line are sized appropriately.
  • Water Flow - Tankless water heaters do not deliver hot water to your faucet any faster.  If your water takes a long time to get to the faucet, you may need to address a different plumbing problem.
  • Types - Not all tankless water heaters are the same.  Depending on your individual needs, certain models may be more effective for your home than others.
  • Permits - Depending on your area, you may need a mechanical permit, gas piping permit, or electrical permit.

Holiday Plumbing Tips:

  • Use Hot Water - If you notice your sink is draining a little slowly, try pouring hot or near-boiling water down the drain.  This can help break up any organic compounds or soap scum.
  • Clean with Baking Soda - Adding baking soda to your sink cleaning can help keep your drains clear!
  • Be Mindful Flushing - Remind your holiday guests to be mindful of what they are flushing down the toilet.  Many items like paper towels and baby wipes should be thrown away, rather than flushed.  They can block the drain line!

Water Heater Maintenance Tips

When was the last time you took a look at your water heater?  Water heater maintenance can help prolong the life expectancy of your water heater and keep it working efficiently.  Here are a few tips to help you care for your tank.

Maintenance Tips:

  • Location - Know where your water heater is located.  You should have clear access to it, whether it's located in your basement or tucked away in your attic.
  • Type - Water heaters can be powered by natural gas, electric or propane.  Knowing how your water heater is fueled, as well as the model is important for warranty purposes and repairs.
  • Power Supply - In the event of an emergency, it's important to know how to turn off your water heater and it's power supply.  Know where your water shutoff valves are located!
  • Cleared Area - Not only do gas fired units need an oxygen supply to burn gas, but a cluttered area can affect the efficiency of your unit.  If your unit is leaking, you might not notice if the surrounding area is not clear.
For more water heater maintenance tips, read this article from Angies List.  You can also contact our office to learn more about how to keep your water heater in good condition with annual inspections.  Call 214-736-1881 to contact bluefrog Plumbing + Drain of Dallas/Ft. Worth today!

Reasons Your Sink is Draining Slowly

Is you bathroom sink draining slowly?  Slow draining sinks are a frustrating, but common household plumbing problem.  Here are a few of the reasons behind why your sink drain might be giving you a problem.

Possible Causes:

  • Deterioration - Old pipes can deteriorate from within.  This may cause your sink to drain less efficiently.
  • Partial Clog - Hair from brushing, shaving, or beard-trimming can become matted in your drain pipes.  This will prevent the water from passing through and cause your sink to drain slowly.
  • Stuck Objects - Toys, jewelry, and other small objects can get stuck in your drain pipes.  The small objects can get stuck in the drain and block the pipe.
  • Tree Roots - Tree roots around your home seek nutrients and water.  If they find a crack in your main drain line, they can get inside the pipes and slow down or block your plumbing system.
If you notice that your sink is draining slowly, contact bluefrog Plumbing + Drain.  Our technicians can determine the reason behind your slow draining sink and help you correct all of your home plumbing problems.  Call 214-736-1881 to contact bluefrog Plumbing + Drain of Dallas/Ft. Worth today!

Lookout For These Water Heater Warning Signs

Is it time to replace your water heater?  Knowing when you're due for an upgrade can help prevent unnecessary leaks and water damage.  Here are a few warning signs to lookout for.

Water Heater Replacement Signs:

  • It's Over 10 Years Old - Most water heaters have a life expectancy of around 10 years.  You can find out your water heater's age by looking at the serial number on the manufacturer's sticker.  Check the manufacturer's website for more information on how to get the date from your serial number.  If your water heater is over 10 years old, it's time consider an upgrade.
  • Your Water is Rusty - If find that your water has a red tinge, this could be a sign that your water heater is rusting away on the inside.  This is a sign that your water heater could begin to leak soon.
  • You Hear Rumbling and Noise - As water heaters age, sediment builds up on the bottom of the tank.  This sediment hardens overtime and can cause loud noises as the water heater heats up.  Sediment makes your water heater less efficient and increases wear and tear.
  • Moisture Builds Around the Tank - Moisture is a sign that you have a small leak or fracture in your tank.  As the metal tank heats up and expands, water will leak from the tank.  If the leak is not caused by a loose connection to the tank, it might be time to replace your water heater.

If you aren't sure if it's time to replace your water heater, give us a call!  Our professional technicians can evaluate your system.   Call 214-736-1881 to contact bluefrog Plumbing + Drain of Dallas/Ft. Worth today!
