Lookout For These Water Heater Warning Signs

Is it time to replace your water heater?  Knowing when you're due for an upgrade can help prevent unnecessary leaks and water damage.  Here are a few warning signs to lookout for.

Water Heater Replacement Signs:

  • It's Over 10 Years Old - Most water heaters have a life expectancy of around 10 years.  You can find out your water heater's age by looking at the serial number on the manufacturer's sticker.  Check the manufacturer's website for more information on how to get the date from your serial number.  If your water heater is over 10 years old, it's time consider an upgrade.
  • Your Water is Rusty - If find that your water has a red tinge, this could be a sign that your water heater is rusting away on the inside.  This is a sign that your water heater could begin to leak soon.
  • You Hear Rumbling and Noise - As water heaters age, sediment builds up on the bottom of the tank.  This sediment hardens overtime and can cause loud noises as the water heater heats up.  Sediment makes your water heater less efficient and increases wear and tear.
  • Moisture Builds Around the Tank - Moisture is a sign that you have a small leak or fracture in your tank.  As the metal tank heats up and expands, water will leak from the tank.  If the leak is not caused by a loose connection to the tank, it might be time to replace your water heater.
