Water Heater Maintenance Tips

When was the last time you took a look at your water heater?  Water heater maintenance can help prolong the life expectancy of your water heater and keep it working efficiently.  Here are a few tips to help you care for your tank.

Maintenance Tips:

  • Location - Know where your water heater is located.  You should have clear access to it, whether it's located in your basement or tucked away in your attic.
  • Type - Water heaters can be powered by natural gas, electric or propane.  Knowing how your water heater is fueled, as well as the model is important for warranty purposes and repairs.
  • Power Supply - In the event of an emergency, it's important to know how to turn off your water heater and it's power supply.  Know where your water shutoff valves are located!
  • Cleared Area - Not only do gas fired units need an oxygen supply to burn gas, but a cluttered area can affect the efficiency of your unit.  If your unit is leaking, you might not notice if the surrounding area is not clear.
